WRG is supporting one of the UK’s leading property and construction consultancies, with the appointment of an experienced Building Regulations Principal Designer to join their growing team in Birmingham.
Our client has been established for almost 80 years and has developed an excellent reputation across the built environment, working with a wide range of high-profile clients across property, construction, infrastructure and development. This is a brilliant opportunity for an experienced Architect, Architectural Technologist, Building Control professional or Building Regulations specialist to take a slight side step in their career and play a key role in delivering the Building Regulations Principal Designer service.
You will sit within an established safety, risk and compliance team, which is made up of around 45 professionals and is regarded as one of the leading departments within the business. The team has developed a strong culture of collaboration, technical support and progression, and they are now looking to add an ambitious BRPD/ Building Safety Consultant to their Birmingham office.
This role has been created off the back of the changes taking place across the industry following the Building Safety Act, with our client continuing to integrate its Principal Designer, Building Safety and Building Regulations advisory services.
The project portfolio is varied, interesting and genuinely impressive. You will support clients across housing, residential development, higher education, commercial, retail, leisure, industrial, healthcare, motorsport and wider built environment schemes, with projects delivered across the Midlands and nationally.
As the Building Regulations Principal Designer, you will support clients in navigating their duties under the Building Safety Act and Building Regulations, ensuring compliance is considered, coordinated and evidenced throughout the design and delivery process. Our client already has a strong pipeline of work in this area, with further opportunities being developed through its existing client base.
This role would suit someone with a strong technical understanding of Building Regulations and design compliance, ideally with experience gained as an Architect, Architectural Technologist, Building Control Surveyor, Building Inspector or similar. Strong communication skills are essential due to the client-facing nature of the role.
Duties will include:
- Providing advice to clients around the Building Safety Act, Building Regulations and wider design compliance.
- Delivering the Building Regulations Principal Designer role across a varied portfolio of projects.
- Liaising with Principal Designers, Principal Contractors, design teams, developers and key stakeholders.
- Supporting clients with planning gateway submissions and wider Building Safety Act requirements.
- Preparing and maintaining design compliance trackers.
- Attending client meetings, design team meetings and project reviews.
- Ensuring the Golden Thread of information is maintained, accurate and accessible.
- Providing technical guidance to clients, contractors, consultants and internal teams.
- Reviewing design information and identifying potential compliance risks.
- Helping ensure projects are delivered in line with current Building Regulations, legislation and industry best practice.
Requirements:
- Background in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction Management or a similar discipline.
- Strong working knowledge of Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act and associated legislation.
- Previous experience reviewing designs, inspecting buildings or advising on technical compliance.
- Membership of RICS, CABE, RIBA, CIAT, CIOB or similar would be beneficial.
- Excellent communication and client-facing skills.
- Comfortable working with design teams, contractors, developers and senior stakeholders.
- A proactive, commercially aware and collaborative approach.
