Are you an experienced Building Regulations Principal Designer looking for the autonomy to lead, shape and grow a developing service?
WRG is supporting an established multidisciplinary design, property and construction consultancy in appointing a Senior Building Regulations Principal Designer.
The business works with public and private sector clients across residential, education, commercial, healthcare, leisure and community projects. Its integrated team includes architects, building surveyors, project managers, cost consultants and health and safety professionals, providing an excellent technical platform from which to deliver BRPD services.
This is a senior, hands-on position combining complex project delivery with technical leadership. You will take ownership of BRPD appointments, particularly across residential and Higher-Risk Building projects, while developing the systems, standards and people required to grow the service.
The Role
As Senior BRPD, you will:
- Act as Building Regulations Principal Designer on a range of refurbishment, remediation and new-build projects
- Plan, manage, monitor and coordinate design work to support compliance with the Building Regulations
- Lead BRPD activity on Higher-Risk Buildings, including Gateway submissions and engagement with the Building Safety Regulator
- Review architectural, structural, fire, façade and building-services information against the relevant functional requirements and Approved Documents
- Establish project compliance strategies, trackers, responsibility matrices and evidence schedules
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams and ensure compliance risks are identified, recorded and resolved
- Support robust Golden Thread information, design change control and auditable decision-making
- Advise clients, designers and contractors on their duties under the Building Safety Act and amended Building Regulations
- Review and monitor the competence of designers involved in projects
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and support to colleagues delivering BRPD services
- Develop internal procedures, templates and quality-assurance processes
- Support fee proposals, client presentations and the continued growth of the BRPD service
About You
You will ideally have:
- Significant experience delivering Building Regulations Principal Designer services
- Proven experience working on Higher-Risk Buildings and complex residential projects
- A strong understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022, dutyholder requirements and the Building Regulations
- Experience preparing or coordinating Gateway submissions and liaising with the Building Safety Regulator
- A background in architecture, architectural technology, building surveying, building control, engineering or another design-led discipline
- Strong knowledge of the Approved Documents and multidisciplinary design coordination
- The confidence to challenge design teams constructively and provide clear, proportionate compliance advice
- Previous leadership, mentoring or service-development experience
- Excellent client-facing, report-writing and communication skills
- Membership of an appropriate professional body such as RIBA, ARB, CIAT, RICS or CABE
- Registration on a recognised Principal Designer competency register would be advantageous.
