WRG is supporting a leading multidisciplinary property and construction consultancy with the appointment of a Building Regulations Principal Designer to its growing London team.
The business provides surveying, structural engineering, MEP, project management, building safety, fire-safety and Principal Designer services across the UK. Its joined-up structure allows technical specialists to work collaboratively on complex buildings throughout their entire lifecycle.
This is an excellent opportunity to join an established Building Safety and Principal Design service with a strong pipeline of residential, mixed-use, commercial, heritage and higher-risk-building projects.
The Role
You will act as Building Regulations Principal Designer, working with clients and multidisciplinary design teams to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate compliance throughout the design phase.
Projects will include existing buildings, refurbishments, remedial schemes and higher-risk residential buildings progressing through the Building Safety Regulator’s Gateway process.
You will have access to in-house Building Surveyors, Structural Engineers, MEP specialists, Fire Engineers, Project Managers and CDM professionals, allowing you to provide coordinated and technically robust advice to clients.
Duties
- Acting as Building Regulations Principal Designer on a varied portfolio of projects.
- Planning, managing and monitoring design work to support compliance with the Building Regulations.
- Advising clients, designers and contractors on their duties under the Building Safety Act and amended Building Regulations.
- Developing project-specific compliance plans, trackers and reporting procedures.
- Reviewing architectural, structural, fire-safety and building-services information.
- Identifying gaps, conflicts and potential areas of non-compliance within the design.
- Coordinating designers and ensuring that compliance matters are addressed and properly recorded.
- Assessing and monitoring the competence of designers and other relevant dutyholders.
- Leading Building Regulations compliance meetings and design reviews.
- Supporting Building Control and Building Safety Regulator submissions.
- Coordinating evidence for Gateway submissions on higher-risk buildings.
- Supporting Golden Thread information, design-change control and regulatory audit trails.
- Liaising with Building Control Bodies, the Building Safety Regulator and wider project stakeholders.
- Preparing clear technical reports and practical recommendations for clients.
- Contributing to the continued growth and development of the consultancy’s Building Regulations Principal Designer service.
What We’re Looking For
The position would suit an experienced BRPD or a technically strong construction professional looking to specialise within Building Regulations compliance.
Relevant backgrounds could include:
- Architecture or Architectural Technology.
- Building Control or Registered Building Inspector
- Building Surveying.
- Structural or Building Services Engineering.
- Design management or technical construction consultancy.
You should be comfortable reviewing complex technical information, challenging design teams where necessary and explaining Building Regulations requirements clearly to clients.
Requirements
- Strong technical knowledge of the Building Regulations and Approved Documents.
- Understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022 and the current dutyholder regime.
- Experience coordinating or reviewing multidisciplinary construction designs.
- Previous BRPD, Building Control, technical design or regulatory-compliance experience.
- A relevant degree or professional construction qualification.
- Excellent written communication and technical report-writing skills.
- Confidence leading meetings and advising clients and senior project stakeholders.
- A practical and proportionate approach to regulatory compliance.
- The ability to manage several projects and competing priorities.
- Experience with higher-risk buildings and BSR Gateway submissions would be highly advantageous.
- Membership of RIBA, ARB, CIAT, RICS, CABE or another relevant professional organisation would be beneficial.
