We Recruit Group

Role: Health & Safety Manager

Location: Cannock, Staffordshire

Projects: Midlands, North West and M1 corridor down to London

Sector: Industrial/ Warehousing and Office fit outs

Salary: Up to £60,000 + Car or Car allowance

We Recruit Group is supporting a fast-growing construction contractor in the appointment of an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join the business and take ownership of its safety department.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly competent construction safety professional who wants to step into a visible, influential role within a growing contractor. The business has been trading for two years and has already reached a turnover of £9m, with a team of 10 office-based staff and around 70 subcontractors active across live sites.

The company delivers industrial/ warehousing and office fit-out projects across the Midlands, North West and down the M1 corridor into London. Due to continued growth, they are now looking for a capable Health & Safety Manager who can bring structure, consistency and leadership to the safety department as the business continues to scale.

The Role

As Health & Safety Manager, you will take responsibility for driving health and safety standards across the business, working closely with directors, project teams, site managers and subcontractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, professionally and in line with legislation and best practice.

This is not a role where you will simply maintain what is already in place. The successful candidate will be expected to help shape, grow and improve the safety function, bringing ideas, systems and practical processes that support the business as it continues to expand.

You will be based from the Cannock head office, with regular travel to live projects across the Midlands, North West and M1 corridor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead health and safety across the business, reporting directly into senior management.
  • Develop, improve and implement health and safety policies, procedures and management systems.
  • Carry out regular site inspections and audits across live construction projects.
  • Provide practical advice and guidance to project managers, site teams and subcontractors.
  • Review RAMS, construction phase plans, risk assessments and safety documentation.
  • Support the business with contractor and subcontractor management.
  • Lead accident, incident and near-miss investigations, ensuring lessons are learned and improvements are implemented.
  • Produce clear reports, action plans and recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings and training where required.
  • Promote a positive and proactive safety culture across office and site teams.
  • Support pre-construction and tender activity from a health and safety perspective.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
  • Help build a safety function that can support the continued growth of the company.

About You

The successful candidate will be a highly experienced and competent Health & Safety Manager from a construction background. You will need to be confident working with senior management, project teams and subcontractors, and capable of bringing structure and leadership to a growing business.

This role would suit someone who enjoys working in an SME environment, where decisions can be made quickly, your input will be valued and your work will have a direct impact on how the business develops.

Ideal Experience

  • Proven experience in a Health & Safety Manager or senior H&S role within construction.
  • Background working for a contractor, ideally within industrial/ warehousing or fit-out environments.
  • Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations and construction site safety.
  • Experience developing and improving health and safety systems and procedures.
  • Confident carrying out site audits, inspections and incident investigations.
  • Strong understanding of RAMS, CPPs, permits, subcontractor documentation and safe systems of work.
  • Ability to engage with directors, project managers, site teams and subcontractors.
  • Practical, hands-on and commercially aware approach to health and safety.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate, NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent is desirable.
  • Membership to IOSH, APS or IIRSM is desirable.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Why Apply?

This is a rare opportunity to join a young, ambitious and fast-growing contractor at a key point in its development.

You will be given the autonomy to take ownership of health and safety, influence senior leadership and build a department that supports the long-term growth of the business.

The business can offer:

  • Starting salary in the region of £60,000.
  • Company car or car allowance.
  • Senior, visible role within a growing construction contractor.
  • Opportunity to shape and develop the safety department.
  • Direct access to directors and decision-makers.
  • Varied project portfolio across industrial, warehousing, refurbishment and fit-out.
  • Close-knit team environment with genuine influence.
  • Strong growth trajectory and long-term opportunity.

This role would suit a confident, experienced and hands-on Health & Safety Manager who wants to move away from being a small cog in a large machine and into a role where they can genuinely make their mark.
